THE RIGHT TO WORK

[Introduction] [Employment Guarantee Acts] [Briefing Material] [Week of Action] [Articles and Reports]

There is a growing interest in the "right to work" among individuals and organisations involved in the right to food campaign. One specific concern is the need for a national "Employment Guarantee Act" (EGA). This new section of the website focuses mainly on this issue. It presents briefing notes on the case for an employment guarantee, draft EGAs for specific states, etc. We hope to add material on other aspects of the right to work (e.g. minimum wages, the rights of self-employed workers, and the need for employment-oriented economic policies) relatively soon.

Employment guarantee and the right to work were discussed at the Bhopal convention in June 2004. In the light of the new government’s promise to "immediately enact a National Employment Guarantee Act" (as stated in the Common Minimum Programme), there was unanimous agreement on the need for an active campaign to hold the government accountable to this promise. As a starter, plans are afoot for a country-wide "day of action for the right to work" on 16 October 2004 (World Food Day). Further details of the activities ahead will be posted soon in this section of the website - watch this space!
